Here at Design Office we spend a lot of time working on projects for the education sector, covering a wide range of products from prospectuses and folders to banners and internal wall displays. Of course, when a Headteacher is trying to promote their school they want their students to be the feature of the graphics, which is why having the ability to supply top quality photography is a key strength of ours.
When designing for schools, professional images can be the difference between a student choosing to go to that school or choosing to go somewhere else. We understand what a negative impact just one amateur image can make which is why we pride ourselves in offering high quality photography shoots as just one of our many services.
In the early Spring of this year one of our local primary schools, Sandbach Primary School, approached Design Office to enquire about some design work. As they were changing to an academy, they wanted a fresh identity which would subsequently lead to new promotional materials, prospectuses and a website and as always we were happy to help!
We began the process by talking to the Headteacher, Lynn Treadway, to take a full design brief, ensuring that our design team fully understood what she wanted to see in the new identity and what she hoped to achieve for the school. For her, a new name meant the launch of a new school and Lynn was keen to see an entirely new identity that would almost make the school unrecognisable.
The creative team here at Design Office began working on a number of different logos, experimenting with various colourways, straplines, layouts and logomarks, offering Lynn a variety of options to choose from. When presented with the final concepts, Lynn chose a fun logo, featuring brightly coloured shapes designed to represent activity and movement and playful fonts, clearly representing the target age group for the school.
As soon as the logo had been finalised a full range of branded items were produced for the school, including letterheads, business cards and exterior signs. However, Lynn was particularly interested in having a branded folder designed and printed with us. For this, we required photography. As we offer photography here at Design Office, we arranged with Lynn for our photographer to visit the school and complete a shoot as part of the rebrand – the photographs taken could then be incorporated into the design of any additional items the school may want in the future.
The same as any other shoot, our photographer began this process by visiting the school to complete a site survey. For them, this was an opportunity to talk to Lynn, get a full understanding of what type of photographs she would like to see, what areas of the school she would like to see featured and what the ultimate goals are. In this case, the photography shoot was all about showing the broad range of subjects the school offers, the buildings and facilities that are available to all students and first and foremost how much fun the current students have when they attend this school. A bonus aspect Lynn wanted to see in the photographs was the rebranded uniform, giving prospective students a good understanding of the various items that are available to wear at the school.
After completing this survey, our photographer came back to the office and spent some time creating a thorough shoot list using the information obtained. This helped them properly prepare for the day, ensuring that they would get the most out of their time at the school and tick all of the boxes on the shoot list.
Before the day of the shoot, Lynn of course asked students to confirm who was available on the day to feature in the photographs and obtained permission from the relevant parents or guardians. When our photographer arrived on site on the day they were then able to ask which students were available and had permission to be photographed, providing them with some direction of where to go and who to look for to start the job.
Our photographer here at Design Office uses top of the range equipment, including a fabulous Canon 1100D SLR camera, complete with a range of lenses and filters. By taking their 18-55mm, 50mm and 75-300mm lenses and UV and ND filters with them, our photographer was able to take a wide range of shots including close range and long distance range images and sharp, crisp images as well as some softer, slightly blurred imagery, offering a variety of photographs for our design team to choose from and select accordingly.
Lynn was impressed with our photography shoot and particularly liked the fact that the images chosen for the folder not only incorporated the same colours as the logo and identity itself, but also featured the new uniform in the majority of them.
Our talented photographer is not limited to portrait photography within the school sector, they are also more than capable of providing high quality shoots for a range of projects including product photography, event photography and studio photography. Just to give you a small insight, our photographer has recently completed shoots that included photographing properties for a housing development company, photographing children for a sports coaching website and even photographing people in our office to create headshots for staff biographies on company websites.
